RIO
MOGG
The Rio Bed is both sculptural and architectural, its structure having been designed so that the base seems to have been carved out to support the back. It is also a bed made for comfort, offering a more supportive position when sitting upright.
The bed is composed of two interlocking elements that create its iconic silhouette and resemble stone structures. The base is solid and weighty, with one end appearing to have been carved out as if hewn from a single block in which a recess had been hollowed out to accommodate the generous backrest. Once in place, this large back element seems to float just above the base, enhancing the bed’s sculptural presence.
The unique shape, height and angle of the backrest encourage a certain posture seated. There is no need to tuck a pillow behind the back to be comfortable, since no pressure is applied to the head, which can move freely without strain. As for the pillow, it can now be used as an extra cushion to support the arms or as a base for a laptop or tablet resting on the legs.
The overall shape of the bed has some brutalist aspects that are offset by the smooth, subtle curves found throughout the bed, adding warmth and approachability. A few oversized piping elements around some of its seams also lend the piece a bolder and more stylistic touch. As for the connection between the base and the back, where the back rests in the carved space, it is highlighted by a shadow line created by the curved radius that runs around its edge, emphasising its depth.
The name Rio loosely nods to the work and birthplace of the late Oscar Niemeyer, whose work on iconic architectural structures tends to be highly sculptural, always masterfully playing with curved elements.
The bed is available in various sizes with a standard or extra-large back. The bed's upholstery is completely removable for washing. As for the mattress, it can be adjusted to different heights in the base of the bed, to achieve the perfect height.
